Multimedia Search Discovery

Search at RTL+ had to evolve from a video lookup tool into a multimedia discovery experience. Users needed to quickly recognize and navigate video, audio and editorial content within one unified search.

The Challenge

Search is one of the main entry points to RTL+. As the platform expanded beyond streaming into audio and editorial content, the existing search experience struggled to keep pace with the growing diversity of media. Results needed to communicate different content types clearly while still allowing users to quickly return to previously discovered content.

The Solution

Search was reimagined as a multimedia discovery layer that helps users navigate video, audio, and editorial content within a single experience. A clear visual system differentiates between media types, while recently discovered items remain instantly accessible. Together, these patterns support both direct lookup and exploration across RTL+’s expanding content ecosystem.

Design Vision

The first iteration structured search into clearly separated rows based on media type and use case, creating order and clarity. The longer-term direction moved away from this rigid separation towards a more fluid, exploratory experience. Video, audio, and editorial content were brought closer together, reflecting RTL+ as a multi-purpose product rather than a set of distinct features.
